April 23rd - April 27th

We had a wonderful week of learning this week. As much as I enjoy rotating the studnets and having them go to different teachers for our review of math and reading, I was very glad to have  " my" studnets back in the room full time. Our big news of the week is that our "Grow a Frog " arrived and we  safely put our tadpole into his/her habitat. We will watch it go through the process of becoming a frog.

In math,we had the opportunity to fine tune some skills that will be tested next week. Other studnets, had the opportunity to try out a math webquest. Those students put their math knowledge to practical use as they became an assistant to a zookeeper and were required to determine how much food the animals needed, of creating the habitat for the animals  as well as building the feeding and watering troughs and determining the type of lighting and grass that the animals would have. The students worked hard on this and there was some great discussion.

In science, our focus has been on lifecycles. Through the help of my intern, the studnets were able to observe diffent stages of the butterfly and moth lifecylce on living organisims. Yesterday, the moth emerged from its cocoon. It was very  exciting. The studnets also had the opportuinty to observe sunflowers at differnet stages.

In social studies, we discussed companies and organizations that have made an impact on Texas and/ Roundrock. We looked at NASA, RoundRock Express, Samsung and we will look at Dell next week. It was a great opportunity to go the websites and learn about how to research and locate what you are looking for.

In reading we looked at how characters change and how we learn about  characters in books by what they do and say and what others say about them. In writing, we are continuing with our family memory.
